Letting go of unused medicines

Do you know that some of the big name pharmacies carry drop-off medicine boxes? Always ask your local pharmacy about it. I had to get antibiotics for a strep throat and when it wasn’t working I returned to urgent care to follow up. I was given a different prescription, which meant I didn’t need the first prescription anymore. Good thing I had it with me as I brought it to show the onsite medical person what I was using.

When I asked the medical professional about disposing of the first prescription, she mentioned there’s an onsite drop-off box. Which meant I dropped off the no longer useful med before I even left the store! So, any expired, no longer needed prescription, over-the-counter and even vitamins can be dropped off. Check with your neighborhood pharmacy to see if it carries a drop-off box. If not, check with your local police station to see if it also carries a drop-off box for expired and no longer usable medicines. It’s a quick process to go through your medicine cabinet to remove what’s no longer useful to hold on to and it is a wise safety move to get expired/unused medication out of your house.

  1. It is important to ask if no longer used salves and liquids are accepted. Generally, these collection points are just for pills. If someone knows where to get rid of salves and liquid medications, it would be helpful.
