When I lived in Boston, more than 10 years ago, I acquired two Chicago posters that show the names of different neighborhoods. I loved seeing the name of neighborhoods I’ve never heard of or figuring out where different neighborhoods are. Now that I live in Chicago, neither poster is on my wall. I figured now would be a good time to let them go. The ah ha motivation came when I recognized the very person who’d like them. Someone who’s starting college this fall.
I went to my soon-to-be college student friend’s high school graduation party. I figured she’d like the maps on the wall of her new college dorm room. I showed her both so she could choose which she wants. One of her friends liked them so much and she wanted whatever the graduate didn’t want. I said go for it. I also told them both that it’s ok if you get tired of them. Recycle or donate them. Once a gift is out of my hands, the giftee can do whatever s/he wants with the gift.
This is a good reminder to ourselves, it is ok to let gifts go if they don’t a purpose anymore.
