Finding ways to keep packing cheap and environmentally friendly

As I begin to pack up to move from my old apartment to another apartment, I am constantly trying to find ways to save money and be environmentally conscious at the same time. There are many ways to accomplish that.

1. Free boxes. Check out your town’s recycling center to see if it has extras. Sometimes there are boxes that haven’t been used, or are just gently used. Another option is to check out your neighborhood stores that get boxes every week (supermarket, hardware stores, shoes stores, you get the idea). Stores are usually happy to give out empty boxes for free. Find out when the best time is to stop by to pick them up.

2. To help secure fragile items or to keep your boxes balanced, pack with your clothes, sheets or towels (especially good to pack in boxes of books to keep them from being too heavy to lift), kitchen items. Newspapers are also great, for example to use to preserve glass and china during packing.

Do you have any other strategies for staying environmentally friendly and keeping the costs low?
