I recently worked with two high school siblings with their own bedrooms before school started. They both have had a busy summer and haven’t had a chance to sort through end-of-school-year papers. The parents wanted them to be organized and ready before school starts.
One bedroom had an overflow of items on the floor of the closet and underutilized shelf spaces reserved for books, sweaters, as well as memorabilia. With Kate, we sorted through the closet piles tossing out sweaters and shoes she no longer wears, organized her sweaters on a shelf, and pulled out items she has no interest in. That helped to make room for storing items she currently uses and favors. In her bedroom we looked at her heavily underutilized bookshelf where school binders and art supplies were stored. The papers in binders were from the previous school year which she didn’t need, so most were recycled. We talked about moving her school supplies to the closet and the books from the closet to the bedroom to help make the bookcase pretty to look at. The bookshelf looked less cluttered with everything in place.
For Layne, we worked on her desk as she wanted space to do homework instead of in the dining room. The desk was piled up with all sorts of things. We went through all the items, sorting through what to let go and what to keep. All of the active electronics such as headset, camera, chargers, speakers and wires were stored together in a drawer next to her desk. All the drawers were set up by categories that Layne uses or will need to do her homework. After that, we tackled her closet, sorting through what still fits her and what doesn’t to donate. We ended up giving up a few bins as they were not needed after sorting through items.
Now both bedrooms are organized and both girls are ready to start the school year organized! I will check on them in a few weeks to see how they’re maintaining their space.
