A few blogs ago I mentioned having helped Danielle, a professional organizer, prune her closet. In exchange, she came over to my place to help me with mine. I am lucky to have pretty good closet space in my bedroom, unlike Danielle, but I still like to edit my wardrobe to make sure I am keeping only the outfits I really love and wear. I also like to shift some clothes around twice a year so my seasonal clothes are most accessible. For fall and winter, I move sweaters and coats forward, and say a sad goodbye to light dresses and slacks as I move them to the back of my closet.
I might sound like a hairdresser who changes her hairstyle all the time because she has access to the salon and fellow stylists who can help her try out new things easily. I love trying out new solutions to make my space work for my lifestyle! But like the hairstylist, practicing on myself also helps me give better service to clients. In the same way the stylist get a real perspective on which hot new looks really work and which don’t, reorganizing at home help make me better at identifying organizing problems, makes me more creative with solutions, and improves the strategies and techniques I can recommend to clients.
I admit I also enjoy tweaking my space! When it comes to clothes, frequently editing my closet is worth it because it keeps me on top of what I have, makes my best outfits easier to locate, and saves wear and tear on favorite items because all the “good” clothes are right up front and ready to be worn – I don’t keep wearing a small number of favorite outfits because it’s too much work to dig into a crowded closet to see what else is available.
While I do not advise turning over your closet four times a year the way Danielle has chosen to do, or editing your wardrobe as often as I prefer, I do recommend that clients go through their clothes at least once a year. By tossing out the unflattering outfits and rearranging so your best clothes are easy to find and wear, you’ll look your best for the year!
What was the best thing you got rid of from your closet or was the most surprising when organizing your closet? I can help make your closet work for you.
