Where does this key go?

Sound familiar? Almost all of us acquire spare keys over the years: from next-door neighbors, family or friends; for cars, old homes or offices; or extras and back-ups prevent lockouts. What if your friends move, your neighbors change locks, the car is long gone, and you’ve changed jobs or no longer can remember where or whom the extra keys belong to?

If your collection of keys fits this bill, now would be the time to toss them. Not in the trash, but as a donation to organizations that collect old keys and make money by selling them as metal scrap. It’s a great way to get unused keys out of your possession. Of course, keep current, active keys on reserve as a backup, labeled so you can identify the right key.

For those of you who live in Massachusetts with a collection of keys to get rid of, Keys for Hope, which is based in Massachusetts, will take them. The money earned from the key scrap directly supports local programs that help improve the lives of the less fortunate. For people not living in Massachusetts, Google search “key donation” and your home state. Some of these organizations also take keys by mail, so even if you can’t locate a drop-off near you, you can still take advantage of this opportunity.
